UPDATE: Student Visa. Already on a Student visa? These are the only ways to apply again from inside Australia.

From 2 October 2026, a new instrument sets out exactly which students and family members can still lodge a Student visa (subclass 500) onshore.

Students who can apply onshore

โœฆ Doctoral students
โž” You are enrolled in a course leading to a doctoral degree when you apply.

โœฆ Finishing your course
โž” You have started your main course and will finish it within 12 months of the end date on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).

โœฆ Moving up one level
โž” You have finished your main course and are enrolled in ONE further course only.
โž” It must be at a higher Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level.
โž” If you finished a higher education course, the next one must also be higher education, with a higher education provider.

โœฆ Provider default
โž” Your course stopped or never started because of the provider, and you were enrolled on that day.
โž” You must apply within 12 months, and only once for that default.

โœฆ Family of doctoral students
โœฆ Family of students whose course is fully funded by a foreign government
โœฆ Family members already on the student's visa, where the student is finishing their course or affected by provider default

โˆด Moving sideways or down, such as from a Bachelor to a Diploma, does not qualify. That application must be made from outside Australia.

โ—† Students finishing their current course, within 12 months of their enrolment end date

โ—† Holders of other substantive visas that are not on the excluded list
โ—† A former student whose visa cancellation was overturned by the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART), if they apply within 28 days of that decision
