This slope started as a problem - camphor laurel, privet and everything in between, on a steep embankment.

Rather than poison or clear the slope entirely, we dropped the camphors that a bush regen team had previously treated, and used the lateral branches to build small terraces coming down the hill - slowing water movement and holding the soil while we work.

The whole area was then covered in camphor woodchip. People will tell you camphor makes bad mulch because it's allelopathic - and they're not wrong that not much pushes through it. That's actually the point. Dig underneath it though and the soil is vibrant and alive.

The privet you can see wasn't poisoned or pulled - it was cut and used to hold the branch terraces in place. It'll regrow, and we'll grub it back occasionally, but for now it's doing a great job keeping the bank together.

Next visit - native grasses and trees once the Land for Wildlife planting allocation comes through.

No poison. No shortcuts. Just time and working with the land rather than against it.

Everything grows fast in the subtropics, and larger blocks up here have a way of getting ahead of you no matter how on top of things you are.

I'm Alastair, based in Maleny. I work with landowners across the Blackall Range to get their properties under control using mechanical and manual methods rather than chemicals. It's more work, but if you want your property looking good and the soil staying healthy, it's the right way to do it. Poison has its place in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing - but too often it's the first tool reached for, not the last.
