Meet James Tan.

James is one of our Directors, based in Brisbane. He spends his days helping charities, churches and schools through tough disputes, policy development and doing good governance.

Off the clock, he is a dad, enjoys bouldering or climbing a wall, and the kind of person who will happily insist he only puts Spider-Man on for his kids. We are not convinced. The kids might not be either.

Our firm holds to this Biblical value closely: “Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.” This week is Anti-Poverty Week, and this year the focus is on the more than one in six Australian children living in poverty. For the charities, churches and community organisations we work alongside, this verse is not an abstraction. It is the work. We are grateful for those who spend themselves on behalf of children who cannot yet advocate for themselves.

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day. In workplaces built on service, whether schools, churches, charities or firms like ours, the people who care for others often carry the most and say the least. Checking in is not a soft skill. It is part of building a workplace where people can be honest before they reach breaking point. To everyone quietly holding a lot right now: you matter, and it is worth asking for support.

Psychosocial hazards are the parts of work that can harm mental health: unmanageable workloads, poor support, bullying, or exposure to distressing situations. Under work health and safety law, employers have a positive duty to manage these risks, not simply respond once harm has occurred. During Safe Work Month, it is worth asking whether your organisation has actually identified its psychosocial risks and done something about them. Policy on paper is not the same as safety in practice.

AGM season is here, and for many boards it is the busiest governance period of the year. It is also where gaps tend to surface: directors unsure of their duties, conflicts of interest recorded loosely, constitutions not quite followed. A well-run AGM is more than a compliance exercise. A simple Will is not always a sufficient Will. If your circumstances include a blended family, a business interest, a vulnerable beneficiary or significant assets, a basic template can create as many problems as it solves. Testamentary trusts, properly structured, can protect beneficiaries, manage tax outcomes and reduce the risk of disputes. Estate planning at this level is less about a document and more about strategy. If your situation has grown more complex than your Will, it may be time to revisit it.

For many organisations, AGM season is around the corner, and a smooth annual general meeting takes a bit more planning than it might seem.

A few things are worth getting right. Give proper notice, in the way and timeframe your constitution requires. Make sure you will have a quorum. Prepare your reports and financials in good time. Handle elections and any special business correctly. And take clear minutes, because the AGM is one of the most important meetings you will record all year.

Getting the process right is not just good practice. If your meeting or its decisions are ever challenged, the details of how it was run can really matter.
