NSW has opened subclass 190 nominations — and healthcare is on the skills list.

New South Wales has opened its nomination program for the subclass 190. If that is new to you, the 190 is permanent residency, and a state or territory has to nominate you for it. NSW is one of eight that can.

🩺 Nursing is on their skills list. But here is the part worth sitting with.

Healthcare is a priority in every state and territory in Australia. All of them. That is genuinely unusual — most occupations are sought in two or three places. Yours is sought everywhere.

So the question has never been whether Australia wants you. It is which route actually fits your circumstances, your qualification and where you are now.

📅 Two things from the NSW website worth knowing.

The date you submitted your expression of interest makes no difference to your chances. There is no queue and nobody is working their way towards you. It comes down to how you rank, not how long you have been waiting.

⚠️ And NSW states plainly that nomination is exceptionally competitive, and encourages applicants to consider other pathways rather than wait to be invited. That is a state government telling you to have a second plan.

🧭 Which, when healthcare is a priority everywhere, you almost certainly do.

Nurses: who can actually come with you to Australia? 🇦🇺

This is the part where a straightforward-looking application stops being straightforward, and it catches almost everybody.

💍 Your partner has to be declared whether or not they are coming with you. Not to save money, not to sort out later. Leaving a partner off is non-disclosure, and that can affect your options long after this application is finished.

👧 Your children have to meet dependency requirements. It is not enough that they are your child. And an older child who is working, or studying and supporting themselves, may not meet the test even if they live with you.

🎂 A child turning 18 during the process changes their position. Applications take months, sometimes longer, and a birthday that falls in the middle of it is not a detail.

🩺 And family members who are not migrating at all are still assessed for health. Every member of the family unit, including the ones staying behind.

🧭 None of this is a reason to panic. It is a reason to map your family properly at the start, when there is still time to do something about what you find.

Your case might look like a migration case, but it can quickly become much more. 🇦🇺

For nurses, one common issue is proving clinical experience. Australia requires specific evidence, not simply a reference or payslip.

🏥 But what happens when the hospital has restructured, your manager has left, records are incomplete, or your employer can’t confirm your hours or scope of practice?

That can become a serious issue for your application.

⚖️ This is where legal strategy matters. A lawyer can consider alternative evidence and also address issues that extend beyond migration, such as custody arrangements, health matters or previous visa refusals.

Nurses: it is not one application. It is four 🇦🇺

Nurses have been building careers and lives in Australia for decades, and there is a clear path to doing it. It helps to know from the outset what that path actually involves.

Four separate processes, run by four different organisations. Once you can see all four, it becomes far more manageable.

🩺 AHPRA is registration. This is what allows you to practise as a nurse in Australia.

📋 ANMAC is a skills assessment for your visa. A different body, running a different process.

🗣️ English is required by more than one of them, and the requirements are not identical.

🛂 Then the visa itself. Employer sponsored, or skilled independent. Both are genuine routes, and which one suits you depends entirely on your circumstances.

Those circumstances matter more than you might expect. Where you trained, what you trained in, when you qualified and how much experience you hold all shape your position. So does the law as it stands today, because migration law and registration requirements both change.

UK nurses: the job is the same. Everything around it is not 🇦🇺

If you trained and worked in the NHS, you already have what Australia is looking for. What changes is the system you work inside.

🩺 Registration moves from the NMC to AHPRA. Different body, different requirements, and it is what allows you to practise here.

📋 Pay and conditions sit in state awards and enterprise agreements rather than national banding, so they vary by state and by employer.

⚖️ And in parts of Australia, the minimum number of nurses on your shift is written into law. Not negotiated. Legislated.

🌏 Then there is the part that does not fit in a list. Space, weather, and a working life that leaves room for the rest of your life.

None of this is a criticism of where you trained. The NHS builds excellent nurses, and that is exactly why Australia wants you.

Two different organisations. Two different jobs.

🩺 AHPRA is registration. It is what allows you to work as a nurse in Australia.

📋 ANMAC is a skills assessment. It is part of your visa application.

One does not replace the other, and getting one does not get you the other.
