Kristal worked for 13 years with the NSW Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and has a strong background in criminal prosecutions. Kristal worked extensively in the Local, District and Supreme Courts of NSW. As a criminal prosecutor, Kristal represented the crown in a range of complex and high profile cases. These included, murder, manslaughter, sexual assault, serious assault, dangerous driving, break and enters and million dollar frauds. Her time as a prosecutor set a solid foundation as a criminal defence lawyer. We know the breakdown of a marriage can be difficult for everyone involved. Kristal's life experience as a mother and supporter of victims of crime, has seen that she is the perfect advocate in the Family Law system. Kristal is passionate about presenting the best case for her clients. LUKE - LAWYER

Luke works behind the scenes at Coastal Lawyers and is available if you need 'urgent' advice after-hours or on weekends (PH: 0410 929 018). With a background in general duties policing and having spent a decade investigating allegations of misconduct within a large government agency, Luke knows his way around a brief of evidence. Luke is a Central Coast boy through and through, having grown up at Umina Beach.

Change can be scary.

Uncertainty can make your body feel all sorts of uncomfortable things. Not knowing what your new normal will look like or even what tomorrow will look like can fill you with dread.

Those feelings are completely valid. Our brains like predictability.

But sometimes, you still have to do the thing scared.

Take the first step without knowing exactly where it will lead. Trust yourself to handle what comes next. And know that clarity doesn’t always come before the decision.

Sometimes it comes because you took the first step. 🤍

You don’t need to have it all figured out to move forward or make a change.

One thing I wish more people knew about seeing a family lawyer…...

You don’t need to hand your whole life over to us.

Sometimes you just need 60 or 90 minutes with a family lawyer, particularly early on.

Time to ask the questions and sense check what you’ve been asking ChatGPT at 10pm.

Time to work through how to communicate a proposal whether that’s at mediation, in a co-parenting conversation or in response to something your former partner has proposed.

Because sometimes clients don’t just need to know what their legal position is. They want some practical coaching around how to actually say what it is they want to say.

Time to find out whether that proposal from your ex is actually reasonable.

Time to understand what information is missing and your legal rights to obtain it.

Time to talk through the concerns you have and understand what needs a legal response and what may need a different response.

Or time to simply sit in a confidential, calm space with someone who deals with separation every day and say:

“This is what’s happening. What would you do next?”

There will always be matters where ongoing legal representation is needed and we offer that full representation service.

But sometimes what you actually need first is good, tailored legal advice, some practical guidance and a roadmap.

Then you can decide what happens next including what you may be able to manage yourself, for how long and when you might need legal help.

And that can also help you manage your legal costs.

“I’m not sure I’m ready to separate yet. I just want to know what I should be doing.”

You would be surprised how often I hear this.

Seeing a family lawyer doesn’t mean you’ve decided to separate. And it certainly doesn’t mean you need to go home and announce that you’ve seen one.

Sometimes you just need information.

What does our financial position actually look like? What should I start gathering? What might separation look like financially and for the children? Is there anything I should — or shouldn’t — be doing now?

There is a big difference between preparing for the possibility of separation and deciding to end your relationship.

Sometimes getting advice simply takes some of the fear out of the unknown.

You don’t need to make a decision in the room. You can gather the information you need, understand your options and start developing a roadmap so that if and when the time comes, you are making decisions from a more informed and less reactive place.

Most women don’t walk into my office saying, “I know exactly what I want.”

It’s usually more like:
“I don’t even know where to start.”

“I can’t believe this is happening.”

“I don’t know what I’m entitled to.”
“I’m feeling stressed and overwhelmed.

I have no idea about our finances.”

Before-school breakfast: toast, Nutella, and a strawberry face because apparently that’s the only way it is getting eaten today. 🍓🤪
This is basically also my job. Every day I sit across from people who are exhausted, running on no sleep, doing their absolute best to make something that’s falling apart look okay for the people who need it to.
Family law is a lot like making a strawberry face on toast at 6:00am. You’re not trying to make it perfect. You’re trying to make it work, for today, for the people you love.
