Wishing everyone a safe and happy Easter long weekend! We'll be hopping out of the office from 5:00pm on Thursday 2 April 2026, and enjoying the long weekend before returning from 9:00am on Tuesday 7 April 2026.

It's the last public holiday in Queensland before Christmas!

Our office is closed today, 6 October 2025 and we'll be back from 9:00am on Tuesday, 7 October 2025.

While full-time and part-time employees are entitled to be paid for public holidays (and have the day off), if you have employees working today, don't forget to check your payroll to ensure you are meeting the correct public holiday penalty rates!

😎 Today is the official R U OK? Day, but it’s important to ask R U OK any day!

Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of your team and workmates can improve retention, productivity, and engagement. You can create a supportive workplace culture by normalising conversations about mental health and educating workers on the importance of psychosocial safety.

You can make a real impact in your workplace by regularly asking “R U OK?”.

According to the R U OK Day team, 9 in 10 Australians report feeling grateful and supported when someone genuinely asks them if they’re ok. So, when you want to start a conversation in your workplace, think of "ALEC":

1. A sk R U OK? : “How are you travelling?”
2. L isten without judgement : “I’m here to listen if you want to talk more”
3. E ncourage action : “What do you think is a first step that might help you?”
4. C heck in : “Have things improved since our last chat?”

📢 NEW CHANGES FOR SMALL BUSINESSES START TODAY

From today, 26 August 2025, the right to disconnect and employee choice pathway to permanent employment will apply to small business employers. These changes have been in effect for non-small businesses since 26 August 2024.

The right to disconnect gives employees the right to refuse to monitor, read, or respond to contact (or attempted contact) outside their working hours, unless it is unreasonable for them to do so. Employers must consider numerous factors when assessing whether an employee’s refusal is unreasonable, such as the employee’s role and level of responsibility, and how the contact (or attempted contact) is made.

Eligible casual employees will now be able to access the employee choice pathway to permanent employment, which allows the employee to provide a written notice to their employer requesting the change. Employers must then consult with the employee regarding the request and provide a written response within 21 days of the employee giving notice, to either accept or reject the change.

It’s been a big month of events!

At the end of July, we attended a workshop with the Cairns Chamber of Commerce and The Therapists Cairns on Mentally Healthy Workplaces, and then we networked with other HR professionals at the Australian HR Institute’s Cairns Network “HR Power Hour”!

We also attended the Cairns Chamber of Commerce Economic Update and heard about the economic conditions in our region.

This week, we took the opportunity to learn more about the emerging film and television industry in FNQ, at the Cairns Chamber of Commerce lunch with Screen Queensland. Lisa and Neikah also both won a raffle prize thanks to CityLife Magazine and Elite Executive Pty Ltd! 🤩

There’s a lot of opportunities at the moment for local businesses to upskill and connect. We might see you at an event soon!
