One year ago, I took a leap and opened the doors to Yarn Legal. I wasn’t sure what would come next, but I knew we needed a space where mob and multicultural communities could access legal services in a way that felt safe, respectful and heard.

Since then, we’ve supported clients through workplace injuries, police misconduct, institutional abuse claims and so much more. But most importantly, we’ve created a place where people can yarn, be heard and get support without fear or judgement.

I’m proud to say we’re 100% Aboriginal owned and operated and everything we do is grounded in care, integrity and cultural strength.

Thank you to everyone who believed in us, worked with us and trusted us.

Here’s to year two.

Just when I think I’ve seen and heard it all, Gisele Pelicot’s case stands out. The cruelty she endured is unimaginable, but what’s most striking is her bravery in standing up and seeking justice.

Accountability isn’t always an avenue that’s possible for survivors, but in Gisele’s case, her voice was heard. Knowing all defendants were found guilty is a powerful reminder of the importance of believing survivors and ensuring their stories are acted upon.

As someone who works closely with survivors, I’m reminded through cases like Gisele’s why we must keep advocating for systems that centre survivors and honour their bravery, amplify their voices and ensure they are met with compassion and action.

This week, I had the privilege of attending Tarwirri's National Indigenous Legal Conference ✨ and presented on Racism and the Machine: Addressing Algorithmic Injustice 🤖✊🏾.

The discussions were powerful, the energy inspiring, and the commitment to creating real change was felt in every room. A huge shoutout to the incredible organisers 👏🏾 for putting together such a deadly event—it was seamless, thought-provoking, and culturally strong 🖤💛❤️.

Feeling so grateful 🙏🏾 to connect with brilliant minds and contribute to the conversation about dismantling structural racism in systems, including the tech and legal sectors 💡📜.

🏛️ High Court limits vicarious liability in Bird v DP: Landmark ruling impacts institutional abuse cases: The High Court of Australia has delivered a significant decision in Bird v DP (a pseudonym) [2024] HCA 41, narrowing the scope of vicarious liability in institutional abuse cases. This ruling has major implications for survivors seeking justice and compensation.

The Court found that the Catholic Diocese of Ballarat could not be held vicariously liable for abuse committed by Father Bryan Coffey in the 1970s, as no formal employment relationship existed. This decision overturns lower court rulings and sets a precedent that may affect many historical abuse cases.

This ruling may prompt calls for legislative changes to broaden institutional accountability. The decision highlights the ongoing struggle to balance justice for survivors with legal principles of liability.

Last week, I had the privilege of attending the National Centre's "Reshaping the Conversation" conference. I was deeply moved by the powerful Welcome to Country delivered by Uncle Billy Cummings, whose words about song and our first sound being our mother's heartbeat resonated with me.

Honored to join the second panel discussing Consequences, risk and impacts of disclosing child sexual abuse, alongside incredible advocates and legends in this space. I talked about cultural safety for Aboriginal people accessing various services, the compouding issues of rasicm and the critical need to fund community-led solutions rather than the violent and damaging carceral systems.

Committed to continuing our advocacy to end sexual violence against children. Grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such important conversations and push for meaningful change.
