Our Local Legend this quarter is John Knights from Koala Rescue Brisbane South. We couldn’t think of anyone who so aptly fits the title of Local Legend. For over 15 years now John has been rescuing local koalas who have wandered onto roads, into yards, fallen into pools, been mauled by dogs, hit by cars, or injured in other ways and need rescuing.
As a retired man, John was doing this totally on his own for many years, volunteering his time, fuel, equipment, energy and passion. In recent years he has been joined by over 70+ volunteers, 20+ of whom are active members of what is now a fully fledged charity and volunteer run organisation.
Koala Rescue Brisbane South Inc rescues over 600 koalas annually, primarly around Whites Hill, Mt Gravatt Outlook Reserve, and Toohey Forest, and operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week. True to form, John says if you would like to help, more rescuers in the field are always welcome. What a Local Legend!
