May is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Queensland. 💜

Family violence can take many forms. It is not always physical - it can include coercive control, intimidation, financial abuse, emotional abuse, surveillance, and behaviours designed to create fear or isolation.

No one should feel unsafe in their relationship or in their own home.

This month is an important reminder that support exists, and that compassionate, informed guidance can make a meaningful difference during incredibly difficult circumstances.

If you or someone you know needs support, there are people and services ready to help.

You can call DV Connect on 1800 811 811 or 1800 RESPECT on 1800 737 732 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).

If you or someone else is in danger, please call 000.

The Tosh Colls team recently had the pleasure of attending a screening of The Devil Wears Prada 2 in support of Women's Legal Service Queensland.

Our review? We loved it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The fashion. The shots of New York and Italy. The romance. And, of course, Meryl Streep being completely iconic. It was the perfect kind of fun, glamorous chick flick to enjoy on a night out with friends and colleagues. 🍿👠

The evening also highlighted the incredible work of Hanworth House and their annual “Labels on the Lawn” event supporting Women’s Legal Service Queensland.

Guests were encouraged to consider donating quality designer pieces to help raise funds for legal services and support for women in need.

Supporting organisations that provide compassionate legal support to women in need is something deeply important to our team.

Both our Principals, Kirstie Colls and Tarah Tosh, volunteer with WLSQ, and Special Counsel Sophie Kannemeyer has previously worked and volunteered with Pine Rivers Community Legal Service.

Access to compassionate legal support can make an enormous difference in someone’s life, and we are proud to support the people and organisations doing that work every day. 💛

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums, mother figures, step-mums, grandmothers, mums-to-be, and fur-mums! 💐

At Tosh Colls, we work with many women who are navigating major life changes while still showing up for their children with strength, love, and resilience.

We hope your day includes moments of rest, connection, and feeling appreciated by the people who matter most.

And if you can’t be with your mum today, or today feels difficult for any reason, you are in our thoughts. 💛

The breakdown of a de facto relationship can be just as devastating as the end of a marriage.

It can also be just as legally complex. ⬇️

In Australia, de facto relationships are recognised under the Family Law Act, and are treated the same as marriages when it comes to property settlements.

Many people are surprised to learn that assets brought into a de facto relationship, finances, superannuation, and even property held in one person’s name may still form part of the overall asset pool.

As de facto relationships become increasingly common in Australia, misunderstandings about how the law works can leave people feeling shocked and unprepared if a separation occurs.

If you would like to better understand your rights and responsibilities, the team at Tosh Colls Family Law is here to help. 💛

Thinking about changing a parenting order?

If circumstances have changed since your parenting orders were made that have you concerned for your child’s safety and wellbeing, you may be wondering whether it’s possible to apply for a variation.

Because the law requires a significant change in circumstances, not every situation will meet the threshold for reconsideration. Understanding where you stand before starting a court process is absolutely crucial.

Obtaining legal advice can help you assess whether your situation may justify a new application and what steps may be available to you.

If you would like guidance tailored to your circumstances, the team at Tosh Colls Family Law is here to help. 💛

Talking to your children about your separation is one of the hardest conversations you’ll have.

We often remind our clients: keep it simple, and keep it kind. 💛

There’s no perfect script, but there is a way to approach it with care.

If you can, have the conversation together as co-parents.

Let them know this decision wasn’t made lightly, and that while things are changing, one thing isn’t - you will always be their parents.

Every child will respond differently. What matters most is that they know they’re not to blame, and that they’re supported through it.

After many years in family law, Kirstie Colls and Tarah Tosh knew there had to be a better way to practise.

They had seen how overwhelming the process can feel when communication isn’t clear, or when people feel like just another file. It wasn’t the kind of experience they wanted to be part of.

So they decided to build something of their own.

A firm where clients feel genuinely supported. Where advice is clear, expectations are honest, and care sits alongside strong legal guidance.

Just as importantly, they wanted to create a workplace where colleagues feel supported, mentored, and encouraged to do their best work every day.

That’s how Tosh Colls Family Law came to life! 💛

If you’re looking for a team that approaches family law with expertise, empathy and experience, we’re here.
