Dora Ko Mediations

Dora Ko Mediations Specialist Family Law Mediator | Parenting Coordinator | Former Judicial Registrar | Multilingual - English - Cantonese - Mandarin - Japanese

Extensive Experience. Thoughtful Resolution. With over 14 years of exclusive experience in family law, Dora Ko offers a rare blend of legal insight, deep empathy, and cultural fluency at the mediation table. She began her career in top-tier boutique family law firms in Brisbane, where she built specialist expertise in high-conflict parenting matters and complex property disputes. In 2018, she tran

sitioned to the community legal sector, guiding vulnerable clients — including survivors of family violence, culturally diverse family, and those in crisis — through some of the most challenging times of their lives. Former Judicial Registrar
From 2022 to 2025, Dora served as a Judicial Registrar of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. In this role, she facilitated a significant number of court-based mediations and managed complex parenting cases involving serious risk issues such as family violence, trauma, and substance use; and complex, high-value property cases. Her time in the Court sharpened her ability to distill legal issues quickly, reduce conflict, and support early resolution. She now brings this depth of experience to her private mediation practice — helping families reach practical, sustainable outcomes without the stress and cost of litigation. Approach to Mediation
Dora is a nationally accredited Mediator, Parenting Coordinator, and registered Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Family Dispute Resolution (awarded first in class), as well as a degree in Psychology. Her practice is grounded in trauma-informed, culturally sensitive principles, and informed by real-world courtroom experience. Dora’s approach is calm, clear, and solution-focused. She works closely with parties and their lawyers to identify key issues, manage conflict with care, and guide productive discussions that support solution generation — especially in emotionally charged or high-stakes matters. Culturally Fluent Mediation

Dora is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, and conversational in Japanese. With strong cross-cultural communication skills and lived cultural insight, she is well-placed to support clients from diverse backgrounds and communities across Australia.

Disrupting Tradition Conference - the highlight for 2026 so far.

Every session was extremely well thought out. I learnt so much and really enjoyed attending the collaborative law and business development sessions. It was also fascinating learning the behavioural sciences behind what we do.

A huge thank you to and for such an excellent conference!

Thank you for the opportunity to play a small part. What a thrill to share the stage with andyo'connor

I also got to meet and catch up with something many wonderful people; and stay for the after party (due to a cancelled ✈️).

Thanks for having me!

The first IN-PERSON out of region mediation for

Aside from the concerns over the threat of a category 5 cyclone, it all went extremely smoothly. It will a real pleasure to work with the solicitors and barristers to get a resolution for the parties.

All in a (longer) days' work.

*I offer mediation services Australia-wide - in person or over Zoom. Please reach out if I can assist.

🏮[LUNAR NEW YEAR]
FUN FACTS (which may be helpful for family lawyers assisting certain CALD clients):

♦️ LNY is celebrated by Vietnamese 🇻🇳, Koreans🇰🇷, Taiwanese🇹🇼, Singaporeans🇸🇬, Malaysians🇲🇾 and Chinese🇨🇳; with national public holidays of varying lengths in those respective countries.

♦️ The day which parents may want their children in their care is actually the eve of LNY. The family gets together for a reunion and "step over" to the new year together; leaving behind the old.

♦️ There are various important rituals observed on each day of the spring period (as a family).

♦️ Clients may prefer to hold off on a call / email from their "divorce lawyer" on LNY day; which sets the tone for the rest of the year (depending on the importance or urgency).

♦️ In countries where there are no public holidays for LNY, CALD clients may adapt their celebrations to the mainstream calendar, such as celebrating on the weekend prior or simplifying the celebrations.

💡 When obtaining client's instructions, it may be helpful to check, on a case by case basis, their practices / expectations for the LNY period.

㊗️ Wishing all of my colleagues and friends an impactful and fulfilling year. 🧧

🗓️ [Issuing FDR invitations over the court closure period]

🌱 Possibly because I remain super passionate - six months into my new mediation practice.

🌱 But it's more likely because a particular X'mas Eve matter is etched in my memory - a young child was withheld by one parent on the last day before office shut down.

⬇️

📨 I can accept briefs to issue FDR invitations directly from clients - send them my way if the need arises (via email only): 📧 [email protected]

📅 Mediation bookings can continue to be made via my website: 🌐 www.dkmediations.com.au

🎄 Lastly, thank you to all of my colleagues for your trust and support of Dora Ko Mediations since June 2025. I am grateful for every mediation brief, publication, CPD, function and coffee catch up.

May everyone have a joyous and relaxing Christmas and New Year Break!! 🎄

SIX MONTHS OF DORA KO MEDIATIONS

A short clip to reflect on the six months that was.

My most sincere thank you to everyone who has:

◇ trusted me to assist with resolving family law disputes,
◇ accepted my invitation to catch up,
◇ invited me to share, speak or write,
◇ shown me the ropes,
◇ cheered me on - especially on the days that didn't make the highlight reel.

Special mention to the brilliant businesses who have partnered with me:

[What motivates me to practice in Family Law?] + [Why do I claim to be culturally competent?]

I hope this article will:
1. be an interesting read 🫣;
2. be an encouragement, esp. to young(er) / CALD lawyers 🧡;
3. help bridge the gap for "the missing demographic" in family law🤝.

The entire issue 3 of The Brief will be excellent holiday reading for family lawyer...when we get there! (link in bio)

In March 2026, I will heading to ICC, Sydney to attend Disrupting Tradition: Innovative Strategies in Family & Estates Law.

The program looks awesome with 4 jam-packed streams over 2 days, 40+ speakers, live discussions and practical sessions! Disclaimer: I am only making a small contribution on Day 1 but I am really looking forward to being a part of the program.

Also, I have just found out that there's a Black Friday sale - tickets are 50% off for the next 48 hours - ie. $550 (incl. GST).

All non-Sydney-siders, come join me (please)!

I am listed in the 2026 Doyle's Guide leading family law mediators page!

So overcome with thankfulness for the trust that my colleagues have placed in me and work as a mediator since I commenced my practice five months ago.

Thank you for this recognition and the encouragement to help many more families in the coming year.

Lessons learnt over a joyous and colourful weekend
(in a super broad summary as there were pages of notes):

1. There is so so so much to AI - excellent companion for sole practitioners (if used in the "right ways").

2. Marketing - I need to up my game with social media- I mean, take a look at what I barely managed to pull together for this post!

3. I am definitely not alone in the journey of owning a new practice and navigating through the behind the scenes. How wonderful to meet new friends.

4. I am still no good at dress ups; meanwhile some of my close colleagues are just next level!

5. Not a learning but more a feeling of gratitude - I have known since I was a baby lawyer when she was ICL in some of my matters. She wouldn't have known, but I watched her and all the amazing-ness from afar; too timid to lean in. Thankfully a friend push me in and I made it to the last hurrah.

Ps. Thank you for all the merch from all the sponsors. My children are fighting me for it.
