Instagram vs reality.
Living with a C5 spinal cord injury isn’t always the highlight reel you see online. Yes, there are pool sessions, concerts, sport, and the good moments — but behind every one of those is a whole system of support that makes it possible.
The reality is relying on support workers for the most basic parts of daily life: getting out of bed, showering, dressing, bowel and bladder care, managing spasms, protecting skin, and maintaining health. It’s trusting people with your body and your routine so you can live a full life.
It’s also the constant behind-the-scenes work — recruiting carers, training them in your routine, dealing with cancellations, late-night roster changes, and sometimes not knowing if someone will show up to get you out of bed the next morning.
Support workers aren’t just “helpers” — they’re the difference between surviving and living.
This is a small insight into the reality many of us live every day. It’s not always easy, but we keep going. 💪
