Caxton Legal Centre is a community legal centre which represents the interests of people who are disadvantaged or on a low income when they come into contact with the law. We are an independent, non-profit community organisation providing free legal advice, social work services, information and referrals. The aim of Caxton Legal Centre’s page is to provide information about social and legal issues relevant to our services. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Caxton Legal Centre is not responsible for, and does not accept any liability for, any loss, damage or injury, financial or otherwise, suffered by any person acting or relying on information contained in or omitted from this page. Caxton Legal Centre Inc.'s vision is to:

- build a just and inclusive society that values difference and diversity and the rights of all people and their communities to the social and economic resources they need to exercise their human rights
- influence the development of law to recognise the needs of people who are socially or economically disadvantaged
- assist people who would otherwise be denied access to justice due to social or economic disadvantage to exercise their legal rights. Our goals are to:
- promote access to justice
- provide free legal advice and information
- empower people to address their legal problems
- increase community awareness of the law
- produce plain-English publications

We at Caxton are pleased to hear of the federal government’s plan to impose stronger measures to combat – an insidious form of .

The proposed reforms are in response to the growing number of Australians, most of whom are and , who have been left with crippling created by their partners and their family using the tax and social security systems.

“These reforms give hope to those who come to us for help after financial abuse by someone they knew and trusted has left them without independence, burdened by overwhelming debt, or facing homelessness", said Colette Bots, Caxton Legal Practice Director.

“We support stronger laws and financial systems that will stop financial abuse before it devastates the lives of victim survivors."

“We welcome these planned changes and commend Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Assistant Treasurer Mulino, and Minister for Social Services Tanya Plibersek for taking action to address financial abuse as part of a broader pattern of coercive control," she added.

Our Seniors Service and Disaster Legal Service teams have been touring southeast Queensland these past weeks to meet members of the community and hear about the issues impacting older people in their areas.

At the Bribie Island Seniors Expo, our colleagues Catherine, Su-lyn and Celeste met with 115 local seniors who came by our stall to chat, get free resources, and ask questions.

If your community is interested in knowing more about the rights of older Queenslanders and how we can keep them safe, please reach out to us.

Our Seniors Legal and Support Service (SLASS) team presented at Queensland Law Society(QLS) Specialist Practice Conference in Brisbane last week, where they examined actual case studies and identified the legal issues often overlooked in many discussions concerning older people in Australia.

The session titled ‘Elder Law Emergency Room: What to do when the client needs help today’ engaged delegates, most of whom were private practitioners, in simulating an 'emergency room' approach to identifying and responding to elder abuse cases - from triage and investigation to stabilisation and prevention planning.

SLASS lawyers Stephanie Saint James, Zsigmond and Sebastian led the discussions and provided practical tips and takeaways that practitioners could apply in their own practices.

Nicky Mitchell, Managing Senior Lawyer of SLASS, said she was encouraged by the response to the session and that it’s “pleasing to see elder law having its own dedicated conference stream.”

“It reflects the growing awareness within the profession of the clear need for appropriate legal responses to the risks and realities of elder abuse. As Australia's largest specialist elder abuse legal service, Caxton SLASS is well placed to help lead that conversation and support our colleagues across the profession on this path,” she said.

We are seeking volunteer lawyers and barristers to join our Evening Advice Service, particularly, those experienced in Employment Law and Family & Domestic Violence Law.

Volunteers at Caxton provide high-quality, free legal advice grounded in a client-centered, social justice ethos. This is also an opportunity for them to work alongside some of Brisbane’s best legal minds.

The Evening Advice Service operates on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Appointments run from 6–9 pm.

This is where we began.

Caxton Community Legal Centre, the oldest community legal centre in Queensland, was started by young volunteer lawyers 50 years ago at the Baroona Hall (now Lefty's Music Hall) on Caxton Street in Paddington, Brisbane.

Since 1976, thousands of lawyers (staff and volunteers) and social workers have supported close to a million low-income Queenslanders accessing justice.

Below is a picture of our office on Caxton Street taken between 1977 and 1979.

This photo, along with other artefacts from the Caxton collection, are on display 'Stories of Justice' at the Supreme Court Library Queensland until December 2026.
