Psychological assessments and reports for court proceedings. What are they and why are they valuable?

They provide insight into the psychological and cognitive competence of an individual.

This exposes any personal factors which may have contributed to the criminal offending.

As shown on the image, a number of implications can result from a psychological report in court.

The benefits? A more therapeutic and treatment approach/outcome may be prioritised, rather than solely punishment.

We assist our clients to be assessed and obtain these reports regularly.

Ever wondered what a law firms weekly calendar looks like?

We have been busy this week, finalising matters across several courts and taking on new ones.

This depicts what an average day may look like, but it does not show all of the behind the scenes work.

Our job doesn’t always reflect a typical 9-5. This ensures that we consistently provide excellent legal representation, and achieve outcomes that reflect our hard work.

31 Charges. 31 Withdrawn.

What a way to wrap up this week!

This client faced many allegations related to burglary and theft charges. One significant issue with the evidence was the fact it did not adequately identify our client as the alleged offender.

The outcome for the alleged co-accused is proof of what could have happened, had our client plead guilty, and had our office not challenged the prosecution’s case.

We pride ourselves on our ability to fight for justice, challenge the evidence, and provide our client’s with the best possible outcome.

Another month has passed, and our July recap reflects how busy it has been. It is hard to believe that we are already in August!

We have seen many new clients this month, almost doubling what we usually take on across multiple months.

The work we put in each week continues to reflect our values of fighting hard and advocating for our clients.

Some of our days in court move quickly. Remand matters in particular can be unpredictable; they certainly keep us on our toes.

In this case, the client was arrested in the morning and released later that afternoon.

This timeline shows the importance of acting quickly following an arrest. The client exercised their right to obtain legal advice before the prosecution took its next course of action.

Every charge and court proceeding depends on individual circumstances. This is why we stress the importance of seeking legal advice before deciding how to proceed when being questioned.

Being advised to plead guilty doesn't always mean it's the right choice.

In this matter, our client initially received advice to plead guilty to a 'serious indictable offence'. After reviewing the prosecution's materials, we formed a different view and advised our client to plead not guilty.

A guilty plea may be appropriate in some matters; however, it requires a thorough assessment of the evidence and all available legal options. Sometimes, it can be easier to recommend an early guilty plea than to rigorously challenge the prosecution's case.

This matter highlights the importance of obtaining legal advice from a criminal defence lawyer who fearlessly advocates for clients. Rather than taking the easier path without fully analysing and challenging the prosecution's case.

Especially when trying to unpack complex terminology. Your safest choice is to contact a lawyer who can help explain your best available options.

Pica Solicitors offers an obligation-free initial consultation. This means there are no conditions to proceed with representation, you can simply seek advice about your charges and decide what to do from there.
